At present, only the Schleswig-Holstein state in the German federation has a regulated online casino gambling industry, and the operation of online casinos are considered legal in the state. The former government of Schleswig-Holstein has refused to sign on a treaty which would allow other German states to monopolize internet gambling sites within the jurisdiction. According to Schleswig-Holstein, the treaty is not in compliance with free ecommerce regulations set by the European Commission. It is quite refreshing to know that Schleswig-Holstein has stood its ground despite all the pressures that they may be getting from different directions.

Torsten Albig, the recently appointed head for online casino gambling in the state, said that a change in current laws is looming on the horizon. Offshore gambling operators hope to be allowed to offer betting services at their online casinos. The Ministry of Interior has said that different options are still being carefully assessed but that licensing and regulating will continue until a minimum of 6 companies have regulatory approvals. Those who possess original licenses will still be allowed to operate and the law will be in place until the parliament decides to change them. To cut the long story short, the current internet gambling laws in Schleswig-Holstein will continue.

Betfair already has a license to operate in Schleswig-Holstein, and it will continue on operating for two, or possibly three, years. This will enforce the partnership between Betfair and Bundesliga. The Ministry of Interior’s statement gives hope to offshore online casino operators that they will soon be reaping the fruits of their labor and that they will harvest the rewards of the investments that they have made.
